When you have rusty or discolored hot water, no hot water at all, the unit is leaking from the tank, you hear popping or rumbling, the unit is over 10 years old, or you want to convert from tank to tankless.

What's required

Correct gas line size or electrical capacity for the new unit, proper venting (especially for tankless and gas), code-compliant T&P discharge, a working main shut-off, space and clearance for the unit, and a permit in some jurisdictions.
